Connections: National Treas-Eyre

In "National Treasure", we follow Ben Gates, a treasure hunter portrayed by Nicolas Cage, as he travels the world in search of the treasure of The Knights Templar. When we first meet Ben, he is a child snooping around his grandfather's attic. When he is discovered by his grandpa, he is told a story of a great treasure. This story affects Ben deeply and he spends much of his life searching for it. Fast forward to when Ben is full grown and we meet him aboard a frozen ship in the arctic. Gates is with his good friend Ian Howe and his associates, but when a clue of sorts is discovered, they abandon Ben and try to kill him. Gates survives with the help of his good friend, Riley Poole. The pair then discover that Ian is going to steal the Declaration of Independence to see the map on the back. So Ben and Riley set a plan in motion to steal the declaration before it falls into the wrong hands. The stories of "National Treasure" and Jane Eyre are quite different, but they actually share several similarities. The characters of Jane and Ben are quite similar, they are both well-read, witty, intelligent, etc. and neither really found a mate until the middle of their stories. Another similarity is that neither Jane nor Ben were very close with their family. Jane's parents were dead and Ben's dad was always very cold. Although there are some similarities, they are actually quite different. Ben spends all his time trying to make a name for himself and tries to be dignified, while Jane would "rather be happy than dignified"(417). These two stories are connected by many things, but are also quite different.

  1. So far I have really enjoyed your blog and the comical photos. The picture of the shark with Nicolas Cage's face is really quite insightful and helps to build onto the blog. I really like the comparison you made between Ben and Jane because at first they would seem very incomparable. I can tell you really went above and beyond with all your puns and funny photos. Your blog was very entertaining!

  2. I see you put quite an effort into this, but you didn't sell me on all of Jane's and Ben's similarities, especially the closeness with family thing. I'm pretty sure that Ben was very close with his dad, even if he was a bit cold. And for Jane... It's kind of hard to be close with your family when they are all dead.
